What God declares in prophecy, He reveals as well in history. Part of the dream seemed good, and part of it seemed bad. Then He said to me, Son of man, stand on your feet that I may speak with you! (Ezekiel 2:1). 1 In the first year of Darius the son of Ahasuerus, of Median descent, who was made king over the kingdom of the Chaldeans 2 in the first year of his reign I, Daniel, observed in the books the number of the years which was revealed as the word of the Lord to Jeremiah the prophet for the completion of the desolations of Jerusalem, namely, seventy The final words of verse 25 are carefully chosen to let the reader know that while this king appears to be successfully opposing God, all he does is a part of the divine plan for the last days. (12) No distinction between the first coming of Christ and the second is made in the coming of the eternal kingdom of God. But the saints of the Highest One will receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom forever, for all ages to come. Then I desired to know the exact meaning of the fourth beast, which was different from all the others, exceedingly dreadful, with its teeth of iron and its claws of bronze, and which devoured, crushed and trampled down the remainder with its feet, and the meaning of the ten horns that were on its head and the other horn which came up, and before which three of them fell, namely, that horn which had eyes and a mouth uttering great boasts and which was larger in appearance than its associates. ), Then Daniel went in, and desired of the king that he would give him time, and that he would show the king the interpretation, Conjunctive waw | Noun - proper - masculine singular, Daniel -- 'God is my judge', an Israelite leader in Babylon, Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singular, Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singular, Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine singular, Preposition | third person masculine singular, Preposition-l | Verb - Hifil - Infinitive construct, Preposition-l | Noun - masculine singular determinate, Conjunctive waw | Noun - masculine singular determinate. Daniel was an intelligent young Jew living in Jerusalem during the late 600s B.C. I did not include the insert today because I have already included it several times. Liberals reject all prophecies, because they require a sovereign God and a miraculous revelation of future events. This vision was an interactive vision, as Daniel was not only present in the vision but was able to approach one standing by to ask the meaning of what he saw. The fourth beast is a fourth king, different than the others. One of those gaps is found in Daniel 7. Belshazzar came to power several years after the death of Nebuchadnezzar and seems to have turned completely away from the God of Israel. (3) What principles should guide and govern our attempt to interpret the prophecy of this chapter? The three ribs may also represent the kingdoms of Egypt, Assyria, and Babylon which preceded the Medo-Persian empire and then fell to them. Here is the perseverance and the faith of the saints (Revelation 13:1-10). This fourth beast has the distinction of ten horns. Yet Gods covenant to David (2 Samuel 7:16; Psalm 89:14) stands and will ultimately be fulfilled. As the destruction of the last beast and the blaspheming horn came as a complete shock to them, so the Lords coming will catch unbelievers unprepared as well (24:27-39). Having gained an appreciation for Daniel and his three Hebrew friends, over a period he came to faith in their God. In the latter days, before the kingdom of God is established on the earth, kings and kingdoms will become worse and worse. When Jesus came, He embraced this expression as a designation for Himself, giving the term meaning vastly beyond that previously held by any Jew. Alexandra was also intrigued by the profession Spencer was in, which made her want to spend more time with him. Wherever I see the Scriptures speak of the coming kingdom of God, I find suffering closely associated with it. It should be remembered that many narratives of scripture are related in a very condensed form, fuller details being added afterwards. In addition to the beasts iron teeth, Daniel tells us that the beast had claws of bronze. Having related the dream, Daniel then interprets it: it concerns four successive kingdoms, beginning with Nebuchadnezzar, which will be replaced by the everlasting kingdom of the God of heaven. Who is the Son of Man? We do not act on what we see so much as on what God has said. History has shown this to be true in the past, and prophecy assures us that it will be true in the future. Editing is often evident in the Bible (see John 20:30-31; 31:25). As for me, Daniel, my spirit was distressed within me, and the visions in my mind kept alarming me. It is at this time that all human kingdoms will become subject to God and to the saints in the eternal kingdom, which the Son of Man will establish when He comes to the earth to judge and to rule. So he told me and made known to me the interpretation of these things: 17 These great beasts, which are four in number, are four kings who will arise from the earth. Abraham had to believe and behave on the basis of Gods promises, rather than on the basis of his perception. In the Old Testament, the expression son of man was used most frequently in reference to men, who were merely (as opposed to God) human. As the wicked prosper in their sin, it seems as though they can continue in sin without any fear of divine judgment (see Psalm 73:1-11; 2 Peter 2:3-4). Even the fate of this fourth beast is different than his three predecessors, as his life and his kingdom seem to end at the same moment. No wonder interpreters differ about the details. Then the sovereignty, the dominion and the greatness of all the kingdoms under the whole heaven will be given to the people of the saints of the Highest One; His kingdom will be an everlasting kingdom, and all the dominions will serve and obey Him. At this point the revelation ended. Neither peer opposition nor the king's new law (chapter 6) greatly disturbed Daniel. 81 See Ezekiel 29:21 for a similar use of the imagery of making a horn grow to describe a kings promotion to power. The vision comes to Daniel in Belshazzars first year.78 A subsequent and related vision comes to him in this kings third year (see 8:1). In his interpretation of the dream, Daniel told Nebuchadnezzar he was the head of gold. As Daniel watches, the wings are torn off the beast, and the creature stands erect like a man and a human mind is given to it. As I read through the statements men have made about the God of Israel in the first six chapters of Daniel, I find that what men came to know and to acknowledge through history, God declares through prophecy. A revelation from God in his sleep discloses future events which Daniel finds most troubling. 26 But the court will sit for judgment, and his dominion will be taken away, annihilated and destroyed forever. In the second year of his reign, Nebuchadnezzar had dreams; his mind was troubled and he could not sleep. Yet, his emotional response was valid and changed little after the vision was explained more fully. Nebuchadnezzar became distressed when he received his first night vision (2:1) because he did understand some of his dream. In spite of these kings, the saints of the Highest One will possess the eternal kingdom forever and ever. The words of Daniel which applied to the beasts now found application to them. The beasts are hardly worthy of prose, but the court of heaven deserves a description of the finest words. She makes it clear in a rather public fashion that she finds him desirable. Alexandra, the daughter of a rich British aristocrat, caught his attention. Did Daniel interpret dreams? Prophecy is necessary because Gods thoughts are not our thoughts, and His ways are not our ways. Daniel described the beast as having iron teeth and that it devours, crushes, and tramples under its feet all that stands in its way. In our passage, Daniel asks for and receives an explanation. Introduction to Daniel 11 (8) Is there any relationship between Nebuchadnezzars dream in chapter 2 and Daniels dream in chapter 7? Prophecies are given so that we may look at history, especially events occurring in our own lifetime, from Gods perspective. In the verses following our lesson text, the vision is explained (Daniel 7:21-27). Suffering and glory are a part of one work. This description certainly fits the account of Nebuchadnezzars plunge from power and sanity in chapter 4. Child-bearing is a process which involves suffering and glory. (3) This chapter contains the major segment of Daniel, which is primarily prophetic, although it does not contain the first prophecy in the Book of Daniel. When we expect it least, the Lord will return, the wicked will be punished, and the kingdom of God established forevermore. The statue has four parts; there are four beasts. The saints should also expect the wicked to prosper, for a season. Those of Daniel, Nebuchadnezzar, and Darius all agree with the prophecy of Daniel 7. Remember Daniel was in his 60s when he received this revelation. God would strike him down suddenly too and bring his kingdom to a swift end. Those who will reign with Christ are those who have suffered (see Romans 8:17; Philippians 3:10-11; 2 Timothy 2:12). In the euphoria of this grand event, someone might well conclude the kingdom of God was to be established within the lifetime of those returning to Israel. These saints are the believing Jews of the tribulation, not the believers of the Church Age. This was when his life took a sharp turn. 77 According to Baldwin, This verse [13] has been the subject of more scholarly papers than any other in the book, so indicating its centrality, not only for Daniel but for the New Testament also. Baldwin, p. 142. It is virtually the opposite of the term beast. The expression, Son of man, is not new to Daniel. 16 I approached one of those who were standing by and began asking him the exact meaning of all this. Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers, OT Prophets: Daniel 2:16 Daniel went in and desired (Dan. I encourage you to compare the statements of Daniel 2:21-22, 44, 47; 4:3, 34-35, 37; 6:26 with the content and declarations of Daniel 7. In the Psalms and also in Daniel 7, the expression Son of Man begins to take on a more technical meaning, referring to the Messiah, who will sit on the throne of His father, David, to rule over men forever. What is it that these men are testifying against You? 63 But Jesus kept silent. Nebuchadnezzar's dream, Daniel tells him, was about a statue with a golden head, chest and arms of silver, belly and thighs of bronze, and legs of iron, which is crushed by a giant stone, which itself becomes a mountain (vv. In Daniels dream the Roman empire was represented by such a terrible beast that Daniel could name no animal which fit its description. Things are not as they appear to be! And the dragon gave him his power and his throne and great authority. Twice in chapter 7 Daniel speaks of his distress: As for me, Daniel, my spirit was distressed within me, and the visions in my mind kept alarming me (verse 15). He questioned His disciples so that they could confess that He, the Son of Man, was the Messiah (16:13f.). 4 The first was like a lion and had the wings of an eagle. We have already seen this phrase time, times, and half a time in Revelation. When the Lord Jesus Christ came to earth, having added perfect humanity to His undiminished deity, He spoke of Himself very often as the Son of Man. In the Gospels, Jesus began not only to identify Himself as the Messiah, the promised Son of Man, but also to explain all that this involved. Arrogant, boastful, and even blasphemous kings will reign over the nations, opposing God and oppressing His saints. (6) None of the kings or the kingdoms are identified. Daniels vision ends here, but its impact on him does not end. The subject of the vision in chapter 2 seems to be taken up again in chapter 7. (13) In some sense, the last kingdom is still on-going. This fourth beast seems to regenerate in the form of subsequent kings and kingdoms. The first time in Daniel 7:13, he is referring to Messiah, who will sit on the eternal throne of His father, David. We need to be waiting and prepared for His return. In more detail, the outline would be as follows: (2) The Divine Interpretation verses 15-28. During those days the revived Roman empire will be ruled by a confederation of ten kings as described by the ten toes of the statue of Daniel 2 and the ten horns of Daniels dream. 5. Because of his wisdom, and the favour of God, Daniel rose to a position within the Babylonian government. JPS Tanakh 1917 I kept looking until its wings were plucked, and it was lifted up from the ground and made to stand on two feet like a man; a human mind also was given to it. We are not told precisely what it is that troubles Daniel. The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance. (2 Peter 3:89, NASB95)[7] You have a responsibility because you know what the end will bring. That dream was read as our Scripture reading this morning. The emphasis of this brief interpretation falls not on the enemies of God, their power, their brutality, nor their boasting, but on the kingdom of God, its certainty and its permanence for all the saints forever. It was said ( ch. By far, this first beast is the best of a bad bunch. The angel went on in this summary to tell Daniel that the saints of the Highest One would receive the kingdom and possess it forever. 16 At this, Daniel went in to the king and asked for time, so that he might interpret the dream for him. The statue had a head of gold which corresponds to the first beast Daniel saw and described as a lion with the wings of an eagle. Daniel still dreaming said he approached one of those standing there. The second is bear-like. The emphasis is positive. Encouraged to do so, it savagely devours. And yet God said they would. 8 While I was contemplating the horns, behold, another horn, a little one, came up among them, and three of the first horns were pulled out by the roots before it; and behold, this horn possessed eyes like the eyes of a man, and a mouth uttering great boasts. When the court sits for judgment, his dominion is taken from him and he is destroyed forever. 9 I kept looking until thrones were set up, And the Ancient of Days took His seat; His vesture was like white snow, And the hair of His head like pure wool. This horn is called by different names in the New Testament: In 2 Thessalonians 2:3 the little horn is called the man of lawlessness. Revelation 13:1-2 calls the little horn the beast. The name he is best known by in found in 1 John 2:18-24 where John calls the little horn the Antichrist.. Salvation is likewise a process involving sufferingand then glory. He will speak out against the Most High and wear down the saints of the Highest One, and he will intend to make alterations in times and in law; and they will be given into his hand for a time, times, and half a time. They are far from pleasant but an unavoidable part of the process. Chapter 9, on the other hand, has a historical account of Daniels study of Jeremiah and of his prayers of repentance and petition for Israels restoration and return to the land of promise. The dream vortex dies with her, and Rose awakens with her brother, Jed, sleeping next to her. As we shall show later, the content of the prophecy of Daniel 7 is very closely related to the reign of Belshazzar. In his vision, Daniel observed the sea being stirred up into a raging storm by the four winds of heaven. This signifies that the events which follow have been ordained by God. Daniel was terrified or alarmed by the scenes he had seen in his mind and desired to understand what they meant. We dare not ignore that which is revealed nor do we dare go too far afield in speculating about what is concealed (see Deuteronomy 29:29; 1 Timothy 1:4; 2 Timothy 2:23). 8 But since we are of the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet, the hope of salvation (1 Thessalonians 5:1-8). Old Babylonian Omen Text (VAT 7525) In the second year of his reign, Nebuchadnezzar had dreams; his mind was troubled and he could not sleep. Lets pray and ask God to teach us and guide us as we look at His prophetic word. 13 I kept looking in the night visions, And behold, with the clouds of heaven One like a Son of Man was coming, And He came up to the Ancient of Days And was presented before Him.77 14 And to Him was given dominion, Glory and a kingdom, That all the peoples, nations, and men of every language Might serve Him. [4] We of the present Age, the church will reign with Jesus Christ as His bride. With iron-like teeth, horns (some with eyes), and feet, it is utterly destructive. And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure. (1 John 3:13, NASB95)[5] The more we know about the future the more are hearts should be moved to practical preparation. We do not walk by sight, but by faith. The words of verse 1 point to the relationship between the prophecy Daniel received and its historical setting and context. We should not spend a disproportionate amount of time and energy trying to fill in the blanks God has left. Bob was born and raised in a Christian home i More, The Net Pastors Journal, Eng. An eleventh king then rises to power, different from the others, replacing three of the previous kings. Chapter 2 - The original dream describing the future kingdoms of Babylon, Medo-Persian, Greek, Roman, kingdom of God. The entire empire was conquered between 334 and 330 B.C., just four years. It therefore seems that the two prophecies speak of the same four kingdoms by means of different imagery. The latter prophecy of Daniel 7 adds many more details than were revealed in chapter 2. In order to save Rose, Unity asks her to give up whatever makes her the dream vortex. Dwight Pentecost writes, The existence of the church in the present Age was nowhere revealed in the Old Testament. The king knew that Daniel spoke the truth. Between the first half of verse 23 and the second half of this verse we have what has been referred to as the great parenthesis in the Old Testament, the mystery of the church and the Church Age which was not revealed to the world until after the resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ. What God determined to reveal to Daniel should be enough for us. (3) These prophecies must be understood in light of their historical background as provided in Daniel, in the inspired revelation provided by other portions of Scripture, and the cautious use of supplementary information by reliable historical documents or study. His final offspring, so to speak, is the little horn which becomes the great blasphemer, whose life and kingdom is suddenly cut off by the Ancient of Days and the Son of Man. Before the coming of Christ, who would? The angel told Daniel that at the end of those three and a half years the court would sit for judgment and the dominion (a word in Aramaic that means kingdom or empire and the citizens or subjects of that empire) would be taken away from the Antichrist, and the Antichrist and his followers will be annihilated and destroyed forever. First, the prophecies of Daniel are divinely inspired and revealed, and thus they are true and reliable. As for me, Daniel, my thoughts were greatly alarming me and my face grew pale, but I kept the matter to myself. (Daniel 7:1528, NASB95)[1], THE FOUR BEASTS REVEALED (Daniel 7:15-18). Daniel 2:26-49 Daniel (Daniel 2; 4): As He had done for Joseph, God placed Daniel in a position of power and influence by allowing him to interpret a foreign ruler's dream. - Then the king commanded to call the magicians, and the astrologers, and the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans, for to show the king his dreams. For this reason, I wish to clearly state the foundational presuppositions and principles on which this exposition of Daniel is based. Daniel was given several prophetic dreams & visions; and in the seventh chapter of his writings, he records his dream of the Four Beasts, and the interpretation thereof given by an angel. This vision demonstrates the succession of kingdoms and is the very framework of all prophesy regarding the violent opposition against the Kingdom of God - waged by the Kingdom of Satan, who is allowed to . 76 It is not altogether accurate to refer to chapters 1-6 as historical and 7-12 as prophetic. He intends to make changes in time and in law. The angels went on to add that the saints of the Highest One will be given into Antichrists hand for a time, times, and half a time. The reign of Belshazzar was, in some measure, a foretaste of what was yet to come in full measure during the reign of the fourth beast, especially of the eleventh horn. Daniel 7 indicates in the clearest way that prior to the coming of the kingdom of God the saints will suffer at the hand of the final horn and even be overpowered by him. Two weeks ago, we quickly looked at the description of the beast that John sees in Revelation 13 and he described it as a composite of the first three beasts, the body of a leopard, the feet or paws of a bear, and the head and mouth of a lion. Interpretations of Daniels prophecies differ widely. The last kingdom has at least eleven kings. 15 As for me, Daniel, my spirit was distressed within me, and the visions in my mind kept alarming me. The death of this king brings about the end of his kingdom. The other prophecies were revealed to King Nebuchadnezzar and Belshazzar and interpreted by Daniel. Prophecy is necessary then so that men are reassured of divine deliverance and blessing, as well as divine judgment (see 2 Peter 2:4-9). Daniel is greatly distressed by the vision which he sees in chapter 7. Daniel was told that the beasts are kings, but he was not told the identity of any of the kings. International Standard Version so Daniel went to ask Nebuchadnezzar for an appointment to see him , and it was granted him so that he could reveal the meaning to the king. (6) How important is it for us to identity the kings and the kingdoms mentioned in our text? In the context of the coming of His kingdom and the suffering and trials which precede it, soberness is a vitally important quality which prophecy promotes: 1 Now as to the times and the epochs, brethren, you have no need of anything to be written to you. Nebuchadnezzar became distressed when he received his first night vision (2:1) because he did understand some of his dream. He had endured the training of the Chaldeans and he had lived his life in the service of a foreign king, at first the foreign king who had overthrown his country. Their perception is wrong, for suddenly and without warning their day of destruction will come upon them. As we consider what we have just learned from Daniels dream and as we look at Daniels response to his dream and the interpretation of it; this should indicate to us that the more we know about the future, the more our hearts should be moved to personal purity. Upon hearing the details of the dream, Daniel too was troubled (4:19). 11 And I saw another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spoke as a dragon. God stirred up the sea, and from its foaming, raging waters came forth four horrifying beasts. Where it has not caused distress, it should have. If you remember from two weeks ago the bear was raised up on one side, this was to indicate that one part of this united kingdom overshadowed the other portion. La Habra, CA : The Lockman Foundation, 1995, Embedded video for Daniel's Dream Interpreted - Daniel 7:15-28. When God granted Daniel the wisdom to interpret the king's dream, it launched Daniel's long career as a political leader, trusted adviser, and well-known prophet. We have already seen time frame in Revelation referring to half of the seven-year tribulation. The other seven will then likely submit out of fear or a sense of the unavoidable consequences of resisting represented by this little horn growing larger than the seven. Never in the history of the Roman empire has this happened so it is yet future. His thoughts alarm him, and his face pales. For this reason the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. 1 John 3:1-3 says, See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we would be called children of God; and such we are. Daniel 2:24-49 New International Version Daniel Interprets the Dream 24 Then Daniel went to Arioch, whom the king had appointed to execute the wise men of Babylon, and said to him, "Do not execute the wise men of Babylon. The Ancient of Days is a designation for God, not found elsewhere in the Bible. Who are these saints that the angel is speaking of? Let us listen then, and be sober, enduring the sufferings and trials sent our way, looking expectantly and certainly for His kingdom to come. So King Nebuchadnezzar honored God's men. The saints should expect to suffer because of their faith, especially as the last days for the kingdoms of men draw near. His disciples were promised that they would share in His reign as King (19:20). The beast was lifted up and made to stand like a man. Thirdly (and most importantly), the prophecies of Daniel mean exactly what God says they mean, nothing more and nothing less. Hearing this, Nebuchadnezzar affirms that Daniel's god is "the God of gods and Lord of kings and revealer of mysteries". But here in chapter 7, as in Psalm 80:17, the son of man is more than just a man, He is the Messiah. Daniel's prophecy was one of hope. Nebuchadnezzar's dream to him. Many Old Testament prophets shared Daniels distress as a result of the prophecies they received and often conveyed to others.74 Why does the prophecy of Daniel 7 cause this godly man so much consternation? Then the saints will receive the kingdom which will never end. 14 And he deceives those who dwell on the earth because of the signs which it was given him to perform in the presence of the beast, telling those who dwell on the earth to make an image to the beast who had the wound of the sword and has come to life. Then the kingdoms of the earth, the sovereignty, the dominion, the greatness of all the kingdoms under the whole heavens, in other words, the whole world will be given to the saints of the Highest One and the Highest One, Jesus Christ, will rule and it will be an everlasting kingdom, and all the dominions will serve and obey Him. It not only bore witness to the conversion of this king, but encouraged all of the subjects of Babylonian rule to worship the God of Israel. This is what we need to know from Daniels vision, rather than the identity of the beasts. Considering this text has changed my opinion about the gap in the prophecies of the Old Testament. After this chapter, the book returns to the Hebrew language. When He came with His kingdom, they would be sure to recognize Him (24:27). The next three are waking visions seen in the presence of angels, followed by an appearance of the Messiah - the Son of Man - to interpret the vision for Daniel. This chapter is a history, but it is the history of a prophecy, by a dream and the interpretation . We will deal with the meaning and application of Daniels vision later on in our questions and answers. He was at ease when he received the vision, and then he became fearful, and his mind alarmed him (4:4-5). Lion - Babylon. 3 While they are saying, Peace and safety! then destruction will come upon them suddenly like birth pangs upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape. The scene of the four beasts arising from the sea, which Daniel saw in his night vision, is strikingly similar to the account found in the 13th chapter of Revelation: 1 And he stood on the sand of the seashore, and I saw a beast coming up out of the sea, having ten horns and seven heads, and on his horns were ten diadems, and on his heads were blasphemous names. From the context, it would seem that Daniels distress is the result of the wickedness and oppression of the world kingdoms which are represented by the beasts, and by the knowledge that the saints will be oppressed and even overcome for a period of time. Open your Bibles to Daniel 7. (3) The finest commentary on the prophecy of Daniel 7 comes from our Lord Himself. 4:19; Ezk. 6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemies against God, to blaspheme His name and His tabernacle, that is, those who dwell in heaven. Different from the first three, this beast seems uglier, more powerful, and much more hostile toward God and His saints. His throne was ablaze with flames, Its wheels were a burning fire. The beasts emerge out of chaos and confusion; the heavenly court is calm and dignified. Remember he had seen the innumerable host of angels attending the Ancient of Days. Prophecy is always practical and relevant to the person(s) receiving it. Chapter 7 reveals in broad terms what the future holds. The transfiguration of our Lord was but a foretaste of His coming glorious kingdom (16:28). The righteous will suffer. In his vision, the statue collapsed and disappeared, because a mysterious stone struck it at its feet. 11 Then I kept looking because of the sound of the boastful words which the horn was speaking; I kept looking until the beast was slain, and its body was destroyed and given to the burning fire. From Daniel 2:4b to the end of chapter 7, the original text was written in Aramaic (the language of Babylon in that day). Chapter 2 contains a very significant prophecy, revealed by God to king Nebuchadnezzar. Daniel 2: Nebuchadnezzar's Dream by Larry Murray King Nebuchadnezzar had a puzzling dream that no one could explainuntil God gave the interpretation to Daniel.
